Today (well yesterday, but I want it to seem like today) we went to the Rebecca Nurse Homestead in Danvers. It’s basically this really huge place with a few small buildings in it. It’s supposedly the place where Rebecca Nurse, the oldest victim of the Salem Witch Trials, lived.

So basically, we get there, and we can see some really old buildings to our right, and a blue tent in front of us. We walk over, and Professor Hamilton explain the history of the site. He tells us that it used to be land belonging to Indigenous people, but then given by the crown of England to this Bishop. Kinda rude.

Well, then we were split into groups. I got put in the one that was way out next to the trees. We were digging in what the archaeologists thought was a midden. But before we dug, Kenny insisted upon gloves and kneepads. Apparently, he wasn’t going to risk his fingernails or his shorts. When we got to screening, though, he got dirt all over his shoe. He looked pretty upset.

In our first grid, we found a belt buckle, some pieces on old leather, shards of glass, a really big piece of glass, rusted nails, and some charcoal. After the 3rd layer, though, all we were getting was really big rocks.

Then we moved to the next square, right next to the first one. In this one, we found a humongous block of charcoal in the first layer. It probably measured 12 inches length wise and 5 width wise. It wasn’t a square, though, so it’s only a guess.

We also found lots of pieces of charcoal that probably broke off. There were also a few pieces of glass. (One found by me, a bazillion found by Sameer.) Victoria REALLY wanted to find something, which ended up in really funny conversations.

V: Hey, I think i found a piece of shoe leather
Me: That looks like wood
V: Yea, but it’s rubbery *flexes the wood*
M: Can I see?
V: * hands me the wood*
M: *Snaps it iin half* It’s wood.

We only had time to go through one layer of soil though, so there may be lots more underneath!
